Inland Fishes of California
By Dr, Peter B. Moyle
Here for the first time is a comprehensive study of the inland fishes of California. It provides biologists, students and amateur naturalists with a survey of the information available on natural history, identification, and management of a rapidly changing fish fauna. Serious anglers will find the book indispensable for an understanding of the habits and behavior of game fish—where to look for certain species, their feeding and breeding habits, average and record sizes, preferred depths, and major identifying features.
The book opens with an overview of the biology and status of inland fish fauna, including surveys of distribution and zoogeography, ecology and change. Following that are short chapters on anatomical structures of fishes and major identifying features. Technical keys for the identification of all species are then provided.
California is a fascinating place for the student of fish ecology, zoogeography and evolution. The state contains all or part of six large drainage systems and many subsystems, each with its own endemic fish fauna; this natural diversity of fishes is further augmented by the presence of many exotic species introduced from other parts of the world. Much of the information contained here is derived from unpublished observations by the author and other biologists, as well as from obscure theses and reports. Dr. Moyle has made a special effort to note topics in need of further research, hoping to stimulate interest in them before more species become rare, endangered or extinct.
This book is in "as new" condition. It measures 6.5 x 9 inches, has 405 pages with index and references. It is illustrated with 134 in-text line-art drawings.
